DA to driver: pay up · 15 April 08
An Adair Village driver must pay $100 to look at his own police record, according to the DA in Benton County. David Picray – who filed a complaint after being stopped and questioned by Corvallis police in May 2006 – wanted to read related reports without paying the $100 fee. Picray faces higher costs if he wants copies of the documents or wants paperwork mailed to him, according to a story in the Corvallis Gazette Times. District Attorney John Haroldson upheld the fees because cities are allowed to recoup expenses for gathering records. ONPA attorney Jack Orchard is quoted in the story asking an obvious question: “Why is that not a simple request that can be handled in a few minutes?”
