The Curry County Board of Commissioners held a hasty public meeting last week to approve new public records fees, vaulting over opposition from citizens concerned about the charges. The policy change was provoked by a request for emails from a local citizen, according to a story in the Curry Coastal Pilot. Reporter Valliant Corley writes that “Tom Huxley, a member of the Harbor Community Action Committee, made several detailed requests for county records, including one for e-mails that county staff estimated could cost up to $8,000 in staff time to provide.” Huxley sought emails from a single month in 2006 that pertained to certain funds, budget items and credit card expenses. The commission approved related fees, including staff time at $39.35 and their own hourly rate of $53 to review the records for exemptions.
