SPJ Contest Results for 2008

The Oregon and Southwest Washington chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists held an awards banquet on May 30, 2009, to honor journalistic achievements of 2008 at nondaily print publications in Oregon and Southwest Washington, and to present the five-state regional Northwest Excellence in Journalism Awards.

The following special awards were also presented:

  • Rookie of the Year awards were presented to Whitney Malkin of the Register Guard in Eugene, and Matt McDonald of KOHD-TV in Bend.
  • The First Freedom Award, which honors a non-journalist’s championing of First Amendment rights, was presented to Southwest Washington’s Concerned Citizens in Action.
