Awards for the Oregon SPJ non-daily contest were handed out Saturday, May 18, 2013 in Portland. Read the results online now.
At the banquet, we also awarded Nicole Watkins of the Itemizer-Observer as SPJ’s Rookie of the Year. Congratulations to Nicole.
Betsy Hammond of The Oregonian was awarded the Bruce Baer award, Oregon’s top prize in investigative journalism, for “Diplomas Denied” a three-part series on Portland Public Schools. Kristian Foden-Vencil, of Oregon Public Broadcasting, was also recognized by the Bruce Baer committee for his work investigating boy scout records.
Results from the regional SPJ contest are also online.
If you couldn’t make it to the banquet, a member of the Oregon SPJ board will be in touch with you soon about shipping your awards to you.
The annual Oregon SPJ award banquet is coming right up.
This Saturday, journalists from across the state will gather in downtown Portland to celebrate the best in their field. Awards for general excellence in non-daily newspapers and regional awards for dailies will be awarded along with the Bruce Baer Award, Oregon’s top prize for investigative and public interest journalism.
Join fellow journalists this Saturday, May 18, for a fun night of dinner and camaraderie in downtown Portland. For full details and to order tickets, visit Brown Paper Tickets. Questions? Contact Christian Gaston.
Hey everyone, we’re having difficulties with our online payment system so we’ve extended the contest deadline one week to Friday, Feb. 15.
If you’d like to submit your entries now, you can mail a check to the Willamette Week address on our contest page. We’re going to try to fix the payment system by next week.
The 2012 Oregon SPJ non-daily contest is here. We’ve moved to a new system to digitally upload contest materials, based on work done by the Minnesota professional chapter. Go here to submit your work, or just click on the contests tab above. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 8, 2013.
Since this is a brand-new way of doing the contest, we might hit some bumps in the road. If you have questions, please let us know.
Looking for a chance to put some legislative clips in your portfolio? The Lund Report has sent along this job opportunity. UPDATE — Diane Lund contacted Oregon SPJ to let us know she’d like someone to work the session starting December. SECOND UPDATE — Lund is still looking for someone to fill this position.
The Lund Report, an online news source that investigates the health industry, is looking for a reporter to cover the health policy developments when the legislature meets next year. Prior experience helpful but not necessary.
It’s preferable that this reporter live in Salem during the session, which runs from February-June. Whoever is hired would begin working in December. Please submit a resume and clips to Diane Lundd-Muzikant, editor, at diane@thelundreport.org or send them to The Lund Report, POB 82841, Portland, OR 97282
Graduate students within the University of Oregon-Portland’s George S. Turnbull Center (School of Journalism and Communication) are conducting research to help gauge the community’s interest in and perceptions of UO-Portland’s graduate school programs (Multimedia Journalism, Strategic Communication) for working professionals. To weigh in, take the online survey linked below.
As you complete the study, you will have the chance to enter to win a $50 gift card or a Flip camera if you wish to provide your email address. Organizers say you will not be contacted via that email address unless you indicate that you are interested in receiving future information from the Turnbull Center about its programs or classes.
Click here to take the survey.
